***Please note: the Ecovision cleanup on Sunday, August 12th is FULL, thanks to overwhelming response from the community. Thank you!***
A massive spill of an estimated 30 million pre-production plastic pellets ('nurdles') washed up on a number of beaches after typhoon Vincente hit Hong Kong late last month.
Community help is needed to clean up the pellets. Once in the water, nurdles act as a sponge to soak up industrial chemicals and pesticides and other highly toxic chemicals that can cause an array of adverse effects in humans, from cancer to immune disorders.
Ecovision is working with a number of environmental groups and government departments to help clean up beaches along Hong Kong's coastlines. To get involved, organize a cleannup! Please register your cleanup, including the location, date and time of your cleanup HERE.
For information on latest pellet hotspots, visit our friends at FEHD:
1. Sign up a team! Simply choose your beach (check out the MAPS!) and cleanup date, and estimated number of participants you plan to bring along from your company, school or group. Then go to our registration page and enter your details. After signing up, you’ll receive a confirmation email from Ecovision.
2. Attend the free educational briefing session! All team captains have the opportunity to attend a free group briefing. At the briefing, you’ll learn how to conduct a safe, fun, successful cleanup and get the most out of the experience for your whole team. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, and be given posters, educational materials and data tools.
3. Go clean a beach! On your chosen date, you’ll get out in the sunshine and clean the litter off your chosen beach. You’ll be not only making Hong Kong more beautiful, but raising awareness, collecting vital data, and having a fun, engaging day with your company/school/group/family!
